What are rockwool starter plugs?
Rockwool is a man-made material, made out of basaltic rock. The basaltic rock is melted and spun into fibers with specialized high-tech machines. The fibres are then collected to form a blanket. And this is where it gets interesting because by adjusting pressure and speed, the fibre diameter and density can be controlled. High-quality rockwool, like Cultiwool, is produced especially for cannabis cultivation and has the perfect fiber diameter and binder distribution. After the blanket is cut into boards, we cut them into smaller slabs, blocks, and of course starter plugs. At Cultiwool we offer 4 different dimensions of rockwool starter plugs:
- 0 x 1.0 x 1.6 inch
- 4 x 1.4 x 1.6 inch
- 6 x 1.6 x 1.6 inch
- 0 x 2.0 x 2.0 inch
Rockwool starter plugs for hydroponics
Rockwool starter plugs are perfect for the first phase of growing crops in a hydroponic system. Our rockwool starter plugs are known for their uniformity and firmness, being a clean and inert product. Professional cannabis growers know that maintaining consistent moisture levels during the early stages of propagation is crucial for root development. Cultiwool rockwool starter plugs excel in this area by efficiently absorbing and holding moisture, ensuring a stable environment for your precious seedlings or clones. This feature reduces the risk of underwatering or overwatering, allowing for optimal plant development. Starting propagation the right way is a key factor in successful cannabis cultivation. Cultiwool Starter PlugsHow to use rockwool starter plugs
Step 1.
When it comes to preparing rockwool starter plugs for hydroponics, the soaking process is an essential step. As can be seen in the illustration, the plugs should be submerged in a nutrient solution for approximately 10 seconds. It it crucial to use a nutrient solution with an electrical conductivity (EC) value of at least 1.5 mS/cm and a pH level ranging from 5.5 to 5.8. This soaking step ensures that the plugs are properly hydrated and primed to provide an optimal growing environment for your cannabis plants.
Step 2.
Moving on to the next step, which depends on the propagation method you choose, it is time to either insert the seed or position the cutting into the Rockwool plug. If you are working with cuttings, it is advisable to dip them in a rooting hormone solution to promote root development. Additionally, ensure that the cuttings you select are uniform in terms of length, diameter, and number of leaves for consistent and successful growth.
Once you have placed the seeds or cuttings into the rockwool plugs, it is essential to create an environment conducive to their early development. To achieve this, arrange the plugs on a tray and provide high humidity conditions of around 95%. This elevated humidity level creates a moist atmosphere that encourages rapid root establishment and overall plant growth.
Step 3.
Moving forward, as seen in the figure, it is important to pay attention to the moisture levels during the initial days of growth. Mist the rockwool starter plugs occasionally to maintain moisture, but be cautious not to overwater. Keeping the plugs moist but not excessively wet is key.
To determine the water content (WC) of the plugs, you can weigh them. By periodically weighing the plugs, you can assess their moisture levels. Once the plugs reach approximately 50% of their initial weight, it is time to irrigate. It is recommended to use a nutrient solution with an electrical conductivity (EC) value of 1.5 mS/cm. This specific EC level helps to enhance root development, providing the necessary nutrients for the plants to thrive.
Step 4.
Lastly, once the roots have developed and become visible from the rockwool starter plugs, as illustrated in the figure, it is time to make a few adjustments to optimize the growing conditions. Firstly, you can gradually increase the light levels provided to the plants. This increase in light intensity will support further growth and development.
Moreover, it is crucial to adapt the irrigation strategy as the plants enter this stage. With the roots becoming more established, the plants will have an increased capacity to uptake water. Adjusting the irrigation accordingly, and ensuring an adequate and consistent water supply, is essential to support the plants' evolving needs.
The complete propagation phase, from the initial planting to the development of fully matured roots, takes approximately 10 to 14 days. Once the roots have reached their desired state within the plugs, they can be transplanted into larger growing blocks. By fine-tuning light levels, adjusting irrigation practices, and recognizing the optimal time for transplanting, you will facilitate the smooth transition from propagation to the next phase of your cannabis cultivation journey.
